About Us

Towels from a recent guild exchange.

In late summer of 1974 a group of people interested in weaving met at the home of Hilda Daily with the idea creating an organization that would meet regularly. They officially named the group the Poverty Creek Handweavers. The first newsletter was sent out in October of 1975 and noted a current membership of 16

The group’s name was changed to The Handweavers Guild of the New River Valley to better reflect the regional nature of our growing membership.

Since then our group has grown to over 70 members from several counties in southwestern Virginia and West Virginia.

Our meetings are normally held in Shawsville in the George Smith Community room in the Meadowbrook Center. The Center is located at 267 Alleghany Spring Rd, Shawsville, VA 14162.

Here is a link to a Google Map.

Be aware that the sign on the building is that of the Waldron Wellness Center; that is just part of the complex.

There is a driveway just past the building to get to the back where the community room is located.

You can also access the area from the Meadowbrook Library parking lot. There is a drive that goes back to the community center from there as well. The community center is behind the library.

We hope to see you at a meeting soon!
